چکیده

This paper describes the interpolation of head related transfer functions (HRTFs) for all direction in the median plane. The interpolation of HRTFs enables us to reduce the number of measurements for new user’s HRTFs, and also reduce the data of HRTFs in auditory virtual systems. In this paper, a simple linear interpolation method and the spline interpolation method are evaluated and it is clarified advantages of both methods. In experiments, the interpolation methods are applied to HRTFs measured using a dummy head. The experimental results show that the two methods are comparable in the best case. The resultant minimum spectral distortion is about 2 dB for both methods. The results clarify that the linear interpolation is effective for a set of elevations selected based on the cross correlation and that the spline interpolation is effective at large and equal intervals. These results indicate that HRTFs in the median plane can be interpolated by the methods.

Upper hemisphere sound localization using head-related transfer functions in the median plane and interaural differences

Morimoto and Aokata [J. Acoust. Soc. Jpn. (E), 5, 165–173 (1984)] clarified that the same directional bands observed on the median plane by Blauert occur in any sagittal plane parallel to the median plane. Based upon this observation, they hypothesized that the spectral cues that help to determine the vertical angle of a sound image may function commonly in any sagittal plane. If this hypothesi...

The Effectiveness of Chosen Partial Anthropometric Measurements in Individualizing Head-Related Transfer Functions on Median Plane

Individualized head-related impulse responses (HRIRs) to perfectly suit a particular listener remains an open problem in the area of HRIRs modeling. We have modeled the whole range of magnitude of head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) in frequency domain via principal components analysis (PCA), where 37 persons were subjected to sound sources on median plane. We found that a linear combinatio...

MEG study of sound localization in the median plane

The purpose of this study is to investigate the human brain activity relating to sound localization in the median plane. Recent studies of sound localization in the horizontal plane have revealed that right hemisphere is dominant in auditory spatial processing of sounds from different directions. In this study, the auditory stimuli were presented randomly from four different directions in the m...

Mechanism for generating peaks and notches of head-related transfer functions in the median plane.

It has been suggested that the first spectral peak and the first two spectral notches of head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) are cues for sound localization in the median plane. Therefore, to examine the mechanism for generating spectral peaks and notches, HRTFs were calculated from four head shapes using the finite-difference time-domain method. The comparison between HRTFs calculated from...

Enhanced Vertical Perception through Head-Related Impulse Response Customization Based on Pinna Response Tuning in the Median Plane

Human’s ability to perceive elevation of a sound and distinguish whether a sound is coming from the front or rear strongly depends on the monaural spectral features of the pinnae. In order to realize an effective virtual auditory display by HRTF (head-related transfer function) customization, the pinna responses were isolated from the median HRIRs (head-related impulse responses) of 45 individu...
